Corporate Polo Shirts
The classic question of personal preference in polo shirts is; do you prefer pique or jersey-knit? That needs to be your first determination to order custom polo shirts.
Generally speaking, ladies like jersey-knit polo shirts, and men typically like pique polo shirts. What’s the difference? Pique fabric is knit into a honeycomb pattern and it’s highly breathable but can be slightly less soft than jersey-knits. On the other hand, pique washes very well and keeps its shape. Jersey-knit polos can be very soft, and have a slightly shinier finish than pique because the knit is flatter (which makes it possible to print on jersey but not pique). Jersey also holds its shape and washes well. Another fabric option for polo shirts is Interlock, which is very soft and similar to jersey fabric. Interlock will tend to develop fuzziness after many washes, unlike a pique. There are also Mercerized (cotton or polyester) polo shirts, and these fabrics are very soft, but don’t lend themselves to washing. If you choose a Mercerized fabric, we recommend dry cleaning only. In each of these fabric categories you can find both natural fiber options like cotton and synthetic fibers like polyester. Again, personal preference comes into play here, but generally you’ll want to choose your fiber based on the purpose of the polo shirts. If you are in the restaurant business, you may want to consider polyester because it doesn’t fade, but some would note that it can retain odor better than cotton, which isn’t always a good thing. If you have a business where comfort is king, cotton boasts softness and breathability, but can fade over time. Even within those two categories, though, the way the yarns are treated will determine the end-result of the fabric. Mercerized yarns have been treated to remove any fibers that are sticking out, which makes them much softer and shinier than other yarns. The same applies to combed cotton yarns for golf shirts.
Here are close-up pictures of the two main fabrics used for polo shirts:

You’ll notice that the jersey fabric has a familiar chain knitting pattern, while the pique fabric appears as a waffle weave, with more dimension. Once the fabric is chosen, the decoration options should be evaluated. The texture and washability of each fabric determine what you can do with your custom golf shirt. For most golf shirts, embroidery is the way to go. You can screen-print polo shirts as long as you choose a jersey-knit, and silk-screened golf shirts can look nice with the appropriate logo placement and size. But if you prefer embroidery over printing your golf shirts, there are several options. It’s common to embroider the wearer’s left or right chest, and the opposing sleeve. Then you can spread your logo and messaging across two locations so that it’s still subtle and classy, but visible from many vantage points. If you haven’t done embroidery before, the size and complexity of your logo determine the “stitch count” of the design, which is how decorators determine cost. If you decide to screen-print your golf shirts, keep in mind that the placket can interfere with what you may want to do. The safest bet is to use a logo with as few print colors as you can, and size it small enough to fit well within the area on the polo shirt between the arm and the placket. Any Ampro sales person can take a look at your logo and make suggestions about how to reproduce it on any apparel item. It’s what we do all day!
Golf shirts are perfect for “relaxed corporate casual” atmospheres, and studies show that 87% of survey respondents believe that dress-down days and casual attire improve company morale. To boot, over 21.5 million men and 5.1 million women Golf; so when they wear your company’s golf shirt out on the course over the weekend, your brand is achieving many more marketing impressions than you realize. It certainly makes a case for upgrading this years’ employee gift to golf shirts instead of t-shirts.
