Custom Golf Balls

Custom Golf BallCallaway, Nike, Titleist… these are all the magic words for golfers.  Custom golf balls are definitely a crowd-pleaser.  All good golfers have a favorite brand of ball that they try to stick with.  But for the rest of us, we’ll take some free golf balls any day of the week.  And, the fact that we have a few printed golf balls we can play with that no one can claim as their own (shot stealers) is also helpful.  Just because you mark your custom golf balls, doesn’t mean that someone may not try to sneak it into their pocket when they think you aren’t looking.  For almost every golf outing I’ve worked with, they always have custom printed golf balls to give away.  Some clients only choose from the high end brands like Titleist and Callaway, but other golf outings choose more cost-effective printed golf balls so they can leave room in the budget for other gifts and prizes.
Custom Golf BallOne of the most interesting uses in my recent memory for custom golf balls was a team-building exercise.  Apparently this organization was experiencing some in-fighting between the sales team and the customer service team.  So, they decided to order printed golf balls with the message “We can’t make it alone” to remind the sales team that their customer service group was integral to expediting their business, and it reminded the customer service group that without sales, nobody gets to come to work.  They organized a mini-golf tournament with their custom printed golf balls, and mixed up the teams so that each team was comprised of sales and customer service, and they all competed for a cash prize.  After the event, I called the buyer to see how it went, and they said it was a huge morale builder, and they asked me to keep everything on file (which we do no matter what) to reorder those same custom golf balls for another event, but this time with the production and warehouse teams.  To their organization, those printed golf balls will always have that positive connotation of the event, and they will help to remind their employees that they are all on the same team.

The advice that we like to give our clients regarding printed golf balls is really the same advice we give to those buying pens; keep the logo simple.  Your goal should be for those printed golf balls to be legible even when they are at your feet.  If the logo is more than 3 colors, and has fine details, that will all get lost.  It’s best to make your custom printed golf balls very easy to distinguish, and easy to read.  Let the print color do the work, but make the message or logo very clear.  A well executed custom golf ball tends to be an item that gets reordered every year.  If you spend the time up front engineering the logo or message to work in such a small print area, the printed golf balls are far more likely to be successful in the long run.
